UW-Madison Kaltura - Mediaspace Departmental Categories

Departmental categories are designed to provide groups on campus with a portal in which they can place their curated media (video, audio, and images).

FAQs

What are departmental categories?

Screenshot of departmental categories showing the navigation bar of a MediaSpace site. The category that is expanded is UW-Madison > DoIT > Academic Technology > Learn@UW

Departmental categories are simply buckets in which media items (video, audio, and images) and channels can exist. In some ways a departmental category simply adds another level of organization.

How can I get a departmental category?

Departmental categories can only be created by UW-Madison Kaltura Admins. To request a departmental category, please fill out the form located here: Kaltura MediaSpace Departmental Category Request.

Where will my departmental category show up?

Your departmental category will be placed based on your UDDS listing For example, in the screenshot above the UDDS for Learn@UW indicates that it is a part of Academic Technology which is a part of DoIT. While filling out the request form, you will be asked to provide your UDDS.

Is the URL for my departmental category a valid link I can send to anyone?

Yes, it is a valid link that is shareable with anyone. For example, if you would like to share this URL with the public, you can. They can see your media as long as you have the permissions of your category set appropriately.

Because these URLs can get quite long, it is recommended that you use a URL shortening service like go.wisc.edu or bit.ly

Can I make it so media items submitted to my departmental category need to be approved before they are posted?

Yes. Owners and managers of categories have the ability to turn on moderation. This can be done by doing the following:

  1. Navigate to your category’s home page by clicking on it within the MediaSpace navigation bar.
  2. Once at your category’s home page, you will see the Actions button in the upper-right corner.

NOTE: Only users who are logged in and are category owners, managers, and moderators will see the Actions button.

  3. Click the Actions button. Click the Edit button.
