UW-Madison Kaltura - How to Adjust Microphone Levels

This document outlines how you can adjust microphone recording levels so your audio is not too loud or too quiet.

Recording audio with Kaltura CaptureSpace Lite

You can adjust the volume at which your microphone records audio within your computer's settings. In addition, you may also be able to adjust the recording volume on your actual microphone.

Selecting microphone in CaptureSpace Lite

You can select your preferred microphone within the Settings tab CaptureSpace Lite Desktop Recorder using the dropdown menu. While it will not allow you to adjust the input level, it will let you gauge the voice level using the microphone meter.

Adjusting your mic levels

Because there are a ton of microphones in this world, we cannot even begin to show you how to adjust input levels on all of them. Instead, we suggest that you refer to the documentations that came with your microphone. What we can do is point you to resources that help you adjust microphone levels within OS X and Windows.

Adjust OS X Mic Levels

Apple's support document for adjusting microphone levels within OS X can be found here: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18961?locale=en_US.

Adjust Windows Mic Levels

Adjusting your mic levels in Windows is similar to doing it in OS X. A tutorial on adjusting mic levels in Windows can be found here: http://www.howto-connect.com/windows-10-raise-the-mic-volume/

Always Test!

Bad audio makes a video hard to watch and is close to impossible to fix. The best way to get good audio is to make sure you record good audio. That's why it is strongly recommended that you do small test recordings every time you adjust your settings. These small tests can save you a ton of time!
