Kaltura - CaptureSpace - Screen, Webcam, and Audio Recording (UW-Madison)

Kaltura has developed new screen and video recording software, Kaltura Capture, also known as Kaltura Personal Capture. Some dates to be aware of:

  • Tuesday, April 16th: Kaltura Capture was made available to the UW-Madison campus.
  • Friday, May 17th: The CaptureSpace installer download will be disabled to encourage users to move to Kaltura Capture. Users who have previously installed CaptureSpace can continue to use it until June 14th.
  • Saturday, June 1: Kaltura no longer supports CaptureSpace. Users can continue to use it through June 14 but will only be able to receive limited support from the Learn@UW team.
  • Saturday, June 15th: Uploads from CaptureSpace to MediaSpace will be disabled as Kaltura support for CaptureSpace ends. Users will need to use Kaltura Capture from June 15th on.

Recordings created from either software will continue to exist in Kaltura MediaSpace after June 15, 2019.

CaptureSpace is a screen, webcam, and microphone recording tool formerly available to UW-Madison instructors, staff, and students. Users should now use Kaltura Capture. This document is being kept online for a period of time for those CaptureSpace users who may not have seen the messaging about the move to Kaltura Capture.

    Use of CaptureSpace after June 14, 2019

    Kaltura ended support for CaptureSpace on June 15, 2019. Please use Kaltura Capture from June 15, 2019 on. See our documents on installing and using Kaltura Capture. From June 15, 2019 on you can still use CaptureSpace to record your screen and webcam if you already have it installed, but will not be able to upload it to Kaltura MediaSpace from CaptureSpace. If you record your screen or webcam with CaptureSpace and try uploading it you will get an error message similar to "There was an error uploading "Screen Capture - 2019 June 16 01:01:01":
    A screenshot showing the top of the CaptureSpace window with the error message "There was an error uploading "Screen Capture - 2019 June 16 06:05:11"

    If you inadvertently use CaptureSpace after June 14, 2019 and still want to use the recording you can:

    1. Locate your CaptureSpace recording: Kaltura: How to find local copy of CaptureSpace recording .
    2. Upload the MP4 file in your CaptureSpace Local File Storage location to Kaltura MediaSpace: Kaltura - How to Upload Files to Mediaspace (UW-Madison)

    CaptureSpace Introduction

    CaptureSpace is comparable to a less powerful version of other screen capture software like TechSmith's Camtasia. For documentation and more "how to" instructions on CaptureSpace, please see Kaltura's CaptureSpace - User Guide. It is replaced by Kaltura Capture.

    Recommendations

    1. Keep your recordings reasonably short (5-10 minutes):
      1. Shorter recordings reduce the cognitive load on the viewer;
      2. Lapses in the viewer's attention become more frequent with longer videos;
      3. Updating material is much easier if it is more modular (updating a 5 minute video is a lot easier than a 60 minute video);
      4. Longer recordings tend to encounter more frequent technical issues.
        If you need to make longer recordings we recommend you consider using a more powerful screen capture tool.
    2. In the Settings tab check to see what you are using for the Camera Recording Quality and Screen Recording Quality. Using smaller sizes (480p for the camera and 720p for the screen) will result in smaller file sizes and quicker uploads.
    3. Make sure you have enough free disk space on your computer before you start your recording.
      1. A 1 minute recording at 480p for the camera and 720p for the screen is approximately 13.5 MB.
      2. A 1 minute recording at 720p for the camera and 1080p for the screen is approximately 17 MB.
    4. If you have a computer that is 3 or more years old or is close the the minimum system requirements above and are encountering audio-video synchronization issues you may want to try the Slow PC Setting in the Settings tab of the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder:
