Office 365 - Upgrading to Office Professional Plus 2016 for Windows

Starting in February faculty, staff and students using Office Professional Plus 2013 on Windows computers will be notified to upgrade to Office Professional Plus 2016.

When will I be notified to upgrade?

Starting on Feb 23, 2016, all Office Professional Plus 2013 for Windows will begin to be notified.

  • The upgrade downloads in the background and when complete the user receives a notice that the upgrade is ready to install. The student, faculty or staff can postpone prompt; but will be reminded on the next time they launch the application. There are no forced upgrades.
  • The install will take on average 10-15 minutes.

What is the notification you will see?

For affected users, you will see the following notification within your Office client:

Who and what version of Office Professional Plus is affected by this change/notification?

Only NetID users who are currently using Office Professional Plus 2013 for Windows that was installed via our tenant - Office 365 Service Accounts are not affected by this notification. All other Office versions will not be notified and will need to follow a manual upgrade path.

How to determine if your version of Office will receive the notification?

Remember - only some versions of Office 2013 for Windows will receive this notification. Use the following steps to verify if the version you have installed will receive this notification:

  1. Log into Outlook on the web.
  2. Select Settings Settings icon > Office 365 settings.
  3. From the left hand menu, click Install status.
  4. Within the "Install status" screen, if your computer name is listed within the detected installs section, then your Office 2013 version will receive the notification.
    •  To find your computer name:

      Windows 10/8.x

      1. Right-click on 'Start' and select System.
      2. Within the "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" section, you can find your computer name, and its full computer name if your computer is on a domain.

      Windows 7

      1. Click on 'Start'.
      2. Right-click on Computer and select Properties.
      3. Within the "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" section, you can find your computer name, and its full computer name if your computer is on a domain..

Do I have to wait for the notification before I can upgrade?

No - you can do one of the following:

Option 1
  1. Log into Outlook on the web.
  2. Click on the gear icon (Settings) and click Office 365 Settings.
  3. Click Software.
  4. If you are allowed to install Office 2016, click Install button to download/install.
  5. Follow the prompts to install the software. You will be prompted to enter your account credentials (NetID/password) to activate the software.
Option 2 (only available to faculty and staff)
  1. Go to Office 365 - Downloading/Install Microsoft Office.
  2. Follow the steps to "Download/Install Office 2016 for Windows"

How will the upgrade process work?

You can either click on the link (Update Office) within the notification or you can go to Microsoft's detailed documentation.

Will this new version upgrade my existing version or will two instances of Office be installed on my computer?

If you have a version of Office that was not installed via Office 365, how will the install work; will this new version upgrade my existing version or will you have two versions of Office installed - we are waiting for Microsoft to provide us with an answer.

How do I keep on running Office 365 ProPlus 2013?

Important: Before making any of the changes to disabling automatic updates to your software, please make sure to discuss this with your support staff. To control this update, review Microsoft's documentation. For domain administrators, please review the following guide.

How long can I continue to use the Office 2013 version of Office 365 ProPlus

You can continue to receive updates for the Office 2013 version of Office 365 ProPlus until February 2017. After February 2017, there will be no additional updates for the Office 2013 version. Therefore, we recommend that you upgrade to the Office 2016 version of Office 365 ProPlus as soon as possible.
