D2L - Viewing a course as a student (UW-Madison)
UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.
Learn@UW provides a number of ways for instructors to emulate what a student sees inside a course.
Role Switch Widget
The Role Switch Widget, located on the course homepage, allows instructors to emulate a student view for Content, Discussion, Dropbox, and a number of other tools. Change the menu on Course Home to a student role (e.g. A Student) to switch your role. To switch back to the instructor view, return to your Course Home and change the role to My Default Role.
Quizzes & Surveys
To see a quiz or survey from a student's perspective, click on the arrow next to the quiz name to open the drop-down menu, and select Preview.
For a preview of an individual student's grade, click on their name inside the gradebook. Look for the small dropdown "action menu" at the top of the screen, near the student's name in large type, and select Preview.
For a preview of the Dropbox upload process, use the "Role Switch" functionality described above.
