Canvas - You receive a "Failed to Log In" message on (UW-Madison)

This article describes why users may receive an error message when they try to log in to the UW-Madison Fall 2016 Canvas site.

    Failed to Log In Error Message

    When you try logging into the UW-Madison Fall 2016 Canvas site with your netid (, you receive an error that says "Failed to Log In":

    Failed to Log In: Canvas doesn't have an account for user.

    Please Note:

    A secondary problem may exist for some users who lost access to Canvas AND also were members of groups within a Canvas course. Once the user's account is fixed in Canvas, the user may still not have access to a specific group in which they were a member prior to the account conflict. If a user receives this error they should contact the DoIT Help Desk and state that they were enrolled in a specific group within the Canvas course.


    Users should report this to the DoIT Help Desk for resolution and also state whether they had access to a group within the Canvas course. The source of this error is a known conflict between the user's account in Canvas and other campus systems. It may take up to 24 hours for access to be reestablished.
