Tech Store - Apple Computer Personal Purchase Limits

How many Apple products can a personal customer purchase each year? This document explains.

UW-Madison Personal customers, i.e., Students, Faculty and Staff, may purchase multiple Apple products per academic year. We define an academic year as lasting from July 1 through June 30. Note that this applies to Personal customers only, Department customers have no limits.

Every academic year a Personal customer can purchase:
  • Three (3) Desktop Mac models (currently either iMac or Mac Pro)
  • Three (3) Mac mini models
  • Three (3) Notebook models (currently, MacBook Pro 13-inch or 15-inch, MacBook Air 13-inch, MacBook 12-inch)
  • Three (3) iPad models
A personal customer could if they so choose purchase multiple product from any of the above categories, say for instance, one iMac, two MacBook models and two iPad models.

There are practical scenarios where this could occur, Apple has no problem with and does encourage personal customers to purchase an extra Mac for, say:
  • a student's sibling,
  • a student's parent or
  • a student's friend.

Apple's only concern is that the product being bought is intended for the personal, educational or research use of the customer and is not intended for further resale.
