Product Information - About Microsoft Licensing

Microsoft Select Plus

  • Select Plus agreements do not expire unless one of the signatories ends it.
  • All software licenses sold under a Select Plus contract are perpetual.
    • Some items, such as MSDN subscriptions, have a specific end date that coincides with the current Software Assurance (SA) end date.
    • Some licenses (malware protection, for example) are available only with SA.
  • Software Assurance
    • SA is upgrade protection. It gives customers the right to install and use any new versions of the covered software during the specified term.
      • Customers often ask if SA is worth the money. Unless there is a known timetable for release of the next version of a product, it's hard to say. It's much like insurance in that you may pay for it and never make a claim.
      • Three years of SA costs 75% of the price of a new license for servers and 87% of the price of a new license for non-servers.
    • SA ends on the date specified in the product name.
      • The covered time period will be from 36 to 25 months, and is prorated monthly.
      • Every July, Product Management will replace all SA items to reflect the new end date.
    • SA can be purchased:
      • Bundled with a new Microsoft Select license
        • The selling price of SA changes monthly.
      • If a customer has previously purchased SA, they may renew their SA coverage by purchasing 36 months of SA by itself. In July, Product Management emails everyone who had purchased SA 25 to 36 months prior to the 7/31 anniversary and offers them the opportunity to renew.
  • Student Select
    • As of August, 2014, the Tech Store is not selling anything under Student Select. Microsoft terminated the program in 2012.

Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA) will replace Select Plus in 2016
