AWS - Service Description

AWS - Service Description

UW Public Cloud is a CIO-sponsored initiative to deliver public cloud computing services to UW-Madison faculty, staff, departments and researchers. The initial offering focuses on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) in the form of Amazon Web Services (AWS) by DLT and FourPoints.

There are two AWS environments available for campus. The first, via DLT, is for UW Madison workloads and data, and can be used for any research.
  • The net cost to campus customers will be less or than equal to Amazon's published rates for AWS, but will include a 15% network egress waiver.   Please see AWS - Pricing, Billing FAQ for additional detail or contact the cloud team.
The second environment, via FourPoints, is especially for AWS workloads that can be tied to NIH grants (STRIDES), and can also be used for biomedical research that is not NIH-funded.  The latter case must be approved by Research Cyberinfrastructure.  This environment provides higher discounts for the biomedical research, than what are available via the DLT environment.

The AWS campus offerings do not currently include:
  • The ability for customers to provision resources in campus IP space
  • The ability for customers to process, store, or otherwise propagate sensitive or restricted data in AWS without an assessment by the Office of Cybersecurity
Please contact your local IT staff for guidance on AWS usage within your unit or department.
