WiscChat - What is my XMPP Address/Jabber ID?

The following document explains what a Jabber ID is and how to determine what XMPP Address/Jabber ID you should use to configure your instant messaging client.

What is a XMPP Address/Jabber ID?

A XMPP Address/Jabber ID is the account name used to log in to the chat service. In the case of WiscChat, it is your email address (e.g., netid@wisc.edu or name@domain.wisc.edu).

What XMPP Address/Jabber ID should I use?

If you only have a netid@wisc.edu account, your XMPP Address/Jabber ID is netid@wisc.edu. It is recommended that you use your primary address as your XMPP Address/Jabber ID. This address is searchable in the Global Address List, so it is the address people are most likely to add as a contact.

If you have an Office 365 service account, your domain must have WiscChat enabled before you can use the service account email address as your XMPP Address/Jabber ID. Please contact your domain administrator if you aren't sure whether WiscChat is enabled for your domain. We recommend using the primary address of the service account as your Jabber ID.

For all accounts that are eligible for WiscChat, all alternate addresses can be configured for WiscChat. However, each alternate address will operate as a separate account within WiscChat (i.e., each alternate address can have a different contact list, chats will only go to one account, etc).
