Using SFTP to a Virtual Host (vhost)

instructions for using sftp to a vhost on webedit.cae.wisc.edu

Once your vhost is created there are many ways of accessing it via sftp. The preferred method is to sftp to the hostname webedit.cae.wisc.edu. The benefits are:
  1. The default permissions are group readable and writable and no permissions for anyone else (i.e. umask 007). This means that by default any files uploaded will have the correct permissions
  2. The sftp service on webedit.cae.wisc.edu is actively monitored. Staff will be notified if the service goes down.
By default, the home directory on webedit.cae.wisc.edu is /home/vhosts. From there you can change to your virtual host.
