Learn@UW - Surveys Should Not Be Changed While Available for Students to Take

During the period a survey is available for students to take, we recommend that no changes be made to survey questions, except for possibly the "End Date" to extend the survey availability period or discarding a problematic question.

In particular, the survey questions themselves should not be changed during the time period the survey is available.

If an instructor discovers a problem with a question after the survey period has started, problematic questions can be discarded.

Changing questions in a surveys during the survey period has caused problems in the past. Possible problems include:

  • One or more students may not be able to submit the survey.
  • If a survey question is changed, all previous data for that question are lost.
  • Duplicate survey questions may appear for some students taking the survey.
  • Problems could arise with survey reports.
