Skype At The Law School

Using Skype in the Dean Conference room, Lubar conference room, OCPD interview room.

Skype is an application that provides video chat and voice call services. Users may exchange such digital documents as images, text, video and any other, and may transmit both text and video messages. Skype allows the creation of video conference calls.

In the law School, it is used to facilitate interviews, video conference calls and lectures. This document will describe how to setup Skype in three different locations in the Law School: The Dean Conference room in 5215, Lubar Conference room in 7205 and in one of the interview rooms in Career Services.

To use Skype, do the following:

1)      Log into Skype. Usually, the user provides his/her own Skype credentials. On occasion, we use the Law School Tech Department Skype credentials, which are as follows: Username: uwlaw.help; password: r password.

2)      Once in Skype, select Contacts; Find the person you want to call from the contact list. If there are many contacts, you can type a name in the search box to find the contact you are looking for.

3)      Click on the Contact. You will see their details in the main windows. Skype can be used for Audio only calls or Video conferencing. The icons look like this:

4    The icon on the left is used for video and the one on the right for audio only.

5)     At the end of the call, click on the red End Call button at the bottom of the screen.

Troubleshooting Audio Problems

To test audio settings, Skype included a helpful feature called "Echo/Sound Test Service" in the contact list.

When you call the service, you should hear a female voice. If you don't hear anything, Skype's speaker setting needs to be changed.

The service will ask you to record a short voice message to test Skype's microphone settings. Your voice message should be played back; if you don't hear the playback, microphone settings need to be changed.

To adjust microphone and speaker settings, go to Tools -> Options; then click on Audio Settings on the left menu pane. On a Mac, go to Skype -> Preferences; then click on Audio Settings.

It looks like this:
