At UW-Madison, each academic program (degree/major or certificate) is required to articulate, adopt and report student learning outcomes. Academic program student learning outcomes state what students are expected to know or be able to do upon completion of the program. Student learning outcomes should be clear and measurable.
Establishing Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes are established as part of the approval process for new degrees, majors, and certificates and are required by the UW-Madison Plan for the Assessment of Student Learning. Approved learning outcomes are listed in the Guide.
Changes to Learning Outcomes
Starting October 1, 2018, changes to learning outcomes will be processed using the Lumen Program Proposal System. Any changes to learning outcomes require approval of the academic unit (i.e. department) that owns the program. Any changes to learning outcomes be effective for a fall semester and published in the June Guide. Learning Outcomes will need to be Guide ready as they work through the Lumen Programs workflow because the data in Lumen Programs will feed into AEFIS as a flat file, as is. Corrections to spelling, grammar, or clarifications to learning outcomes will not be published outside of the June publication.
Changes to learning outcomes will necessitate corresponding changes in an academic program's assessment plan.
