Top Hat - Syncing Rosters and Grades with Canvas (UW-Madison)
Top Hat courses can be linked with Canvas courses. Instructors, this allows you to invite students from your Canvas course to your Top Hat course course, and sync grades from Top Hat to Canvas, with the press of a button. This document describes how to configure the integration between Top Hat and Canvas and sync up your classlist and grades. (Note: Canvas is the only Learning Management System on campus that allows you to automatically sync with Top Hat. The integration between Top Hat and D2L has been turned off for our campus)
Top Hat allows you to synchronize with your Canvas course to make it easier to communicate between the two systems.
The main reasons why you might want to implement this integration are:
Add your student roster automatically to Top Hat from Canvas
Push your grades from Top Hat to Canvas in a few clicks (opposed to manually exporting and importing your gradebook via Excel)
Allow students to check their Top Hat grades from either Canvas or Top Hat
To get started, please make sure you are the Instructor in the Canvas course and that you have an account on Top Hat. If you don’t, please see Top Hat - Account Setup (Instructors) (UW-Madison) to get started. (Note: You have to first "publish" or activate your Canvas course before you can sync it with Top Hat)
If you need assistance at any time with this process, please contact Top Hat's support for help. Contact information can be found here.
For step by step instructions on how to link your Canvas and Top Hat courses, as well as step by step instructions on how to sync grades between Top Hat and Canvas, please see this document. (Note: Top Hat syncs with the LMS gradebook using student's e-mail addresses. When Top Hat prompts students for a Student ID, they can enter what you want as it is not a field that is relevant for the grade sync to take place. Student ID is simply one way you can sort the gradebook within Top Hat)
