Mainframe - Installing and configuring TN3270 for Mac OS X

TN3270 is a mainframe client that is available for Mac OS X, and allows users to connect to the UW mainframe. The program is similar to QWS3270, which is used on Windows. This document explains how to download and install TN3270, and configure it to connect to the UW mainframe.

Note: To connect to the UW Mainframe, you must either be connecting while on your local campus' network or while using your campus' VPN client if you are located off-campus. For example, UW-Madison users connecting from off-campus would need to connect via WiscVPN before being able to connect to the mainframe.
  1. The TN3270 program was developed by Brown University and is available for download from their site. Begin by downloading TN3270 from Brown University. Once downloaded, double-click on the tn3270_X_3.3b6.dmg icon.

  2. A folder should then appear. At a minimum, select the tn3270 file and drag it to your Applications folder. You may also optionally drag the other folders to the Applications folder, but these are not necessary for TN3270 to run.

  3. Double-click on the TN3270 icon (which you just copied to the Applications folder) and click Open on the prompt.

  4. Enter the following in the connection window:

    Host Name:
    Window Title: UW Mainframe

  5. Click on the icon for Special settings shown above, and specify the following:

    Port Settings: 923
    Security: SSL
    Dropdown: TLS 1.0 Preferred

  6. Click OK to close the special security settings window, and then click on Open Connection to connect to the mainframe.

Note the lock at the bottom of the screen preceding the date and time. This confirms that you are securely connected to the mainframe.

  7. To save these connecting settings for future sessions, click on File, then Save Default Settings.

  8. Make sure that Save host name is checked and click OK to save these connection settings as the default for the future.

Note: If this is your first time connecting using the new secure client, you should change your mainframe password to ensure that it's secure. Directions for changing your password can be found at Mainframe - Changing your 3270 Password and the password rules are available at Mainframe - 3270 Password Rules. Once you've changed your password, this process is complete.
