Desire2Learn - Archive a Course (UW-Madison)

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

It is strongly encouraged that, you to make a backup copy of your course. However, Desire2Learn does not offer a single course backup feature, so a few different export processes are necessary to get all course data. The following information will guide you in how to backup your course data.

WARNING: Student content and grades are regulated by FERPA. Please store data in accordance with University FERPA policies, defined here:

Export Content and Components

D2L allows users the ability to export their course contents and components. This means that any files that exist in the course content section and the-the course structure can be exported in a single .zip file. To learn about this process refer to Learn@UW - Exporting Course Components KnowledgeBase.  The zip can be used to import your prior content into Canvas

Export a Course Grade Book

To learn how to export course grades refer to the Learn@UW - Exporting Gradebook Data .

Once an export is completed, it is good practice to password protect the grade book file. Consult one of the following tutorials to learn how to encrypt an exported grade book file (depending on your computer's operating system):

Download Dropbox Submissions

Desire2Learn has the ability to download user submissions for a single Dropbox folder. The Dropbox tool does not allow for an export of all Dropbox folders and their associated submissions. Learn about the process of downloading Dropbox see the following KnowledgeBase article; D2L - Downloading Student Dropbox Submissions (UW-Madison)

Download Discussion Postings

There is no export tool to export discussion topics/messages in the discussions area of Desire2Learn but there is a work-a-round to archive discussion postings from inside a course.  The following KnowledgeBase article discussions how to export discussion posts; Desire2Learn - How to Export Discussion Posts

Download Quiz Statistics and Reports

Statistics for quizzes can be downloaded to as a .csv file that can be opened with Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet applications. You can also save a Report for a quiz as .csv file. The information provided by statistics and reports is somewhat similar. The following knowledgebase article discusses the process: Learn@UW - Saving Quiz Statistics and Reports
