Windows - Error Message: "Application Log File Is Full"

This document explains how to troubleshoot the Windows error message "The application log file is full." This error applies to Windows 2000/XP only.
Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista

These products are no longer actively supported by Microsoft. No further development will take place on these products and security updates are no longer issued. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 10 or 8.

SYMPTOM

Windows 2000 or XP gives the following error message:

"The Application Log File is Full."

SOLUTION

Change the event viewer settings to "Overwrite as needed."
  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Choose Programs.
  3. Choose Administrative Tools
  4. Click on Event Viewer.
Some users may also have Windows 2000 configured such that Administrative Tools does not appear on the start menu. If this is the case, Event Viewer (and other Administrative Tools) are also accessible via the Control Panel (this is also true for XP):
  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. Choose Settings and click on Control Panel, for XP just click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Administrative Tools.
  4. Double-click on Event Viewer.
In the Event Viewer:
  1. Right click on Application and select Properties.
  2. Under the General tab, select the Overwrite events as needed option.
