Canvas - Overview of the Official Syllabus Tool

This document describes the purpose of the UW-Madison Official Syllabus tool, available from within Canvas.

UW-Madison has modified the Canvas Syllabus tool to include an additional feature designed to capture and display the official, required UW-Madison syllabus information for the course. This tool is called the Official Syllabus, which is a link to AEFIS found on the Canvas Syllabus page. When the course instructor enters the tool, the AEFIS syllabus template is pre-filled with data from the official UW-Madison course offering. Instructors will simply need to provide the remaining information. Pre-filled data is not editable. Once instructors publish the Official Syllabus, it will be visible to students enrolled in the course.

Official Syllabus Tool

Purpose of the Official Syllabus Tool

To fulfill expectations of federal compliance, instructors are required to include specific information on their syllabus for group instruction courses. Information on each syllabus must be consistent. The Official Syllabus is a UW-Madison-specific tool in Canvas that allows instructors to enter the official syllabus information for a course in a consistent format.

A UW-Madison syllabus can be created within Canvas in the Official Syllabus tool within AEFIS, but can also be created in a tool outside of Canvas such as Microsoft Word. However, all syllabi must feature the same standard information. More detailed information from the Office of the Provost about the UW-Madison syllabus requirements can be found here.

Using the Official Syllabus Tool

For instructions on using the tool, refer to Canvas - Editing the Official Syllabus (Instructor).
