Kaltura - Adding YouTube Media to Kaltura

This document describes how to add YouTube media to Kaltura.

Generally Learn@UW-Madison does not recommend adding media from YouTube to Kaltura because if the original owner of the YouTube video deletes or makes it private, it will also become unavailable in Kaltura. Certain Kaltura MediaSpace features don't work with YouTube entries: the quality selector, playback rate selector for users, and the editor for the owner for example. The advantage of adding YouTube videos to Kaltura MediaSpace is you can get Kaltura analytics on those entries. For more information on how to add YouTube media to Kaltura please see Kaltura's document YouTube Entries. To add media from YouTube:

  1. Launch Chrome or Firefox and go to Kaltura MediaSpace: mediaspace.wisc.edu. If you need more information on how to log in to MediaSpace please see Kaltura - How to Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace (UW-Madison) . Alternately user can access Kaltura features from inside Canvas by using the Kaltura My Media feature.
  2. Click Add New and select YouTube from drop-down menu.
  3. The Kaltura MediaSpace YouTube page is displayed:

  4. Enter the Video Page Link or the Content ID and click Preview. To obtain the URL, right click on the video in YouTube and copy the URL. Only public YouTube videos are supported. Unfortunately YouTube captions do not transfer over to the entry in Kaltura MediaSpace.
  5. Enter the relevant information and click Save.
  6. Go to My Media to see the YouTube media. Click on the media to open and play it or the Edit / pencil button to edit the YouTube entry.
NOTE: If the original owner of the YouTube video makes it private or deletes the media after you've added it to Kaltura MediaSpace you will see a message that says "This video is unavailable" when you try to play it from Kaltura MediaSpace.
