Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Win) - Detecting and Removing Malware

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a free malware scanner that is very effective for detecting and removing malware which may be slowing down your computer. It is not supported by the Help Desk. This document will explain how to download, install, and use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan your system.

NOTE: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is NOT supported by the DoIT Help Desk. This document is available only as a guide.

Download and Installation

  1. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here.

  2. Double-click on the file to open it. When prompted, click Run.

  3. Select English as the Setup Language and click Okay.

  4. Click Next on the welcome screen.

  5. Accept the license agreement by selecting I accept the agreement. You may then click Next.

  6. Click Next on the Information page.

  7. Select where to install MBAM. Most users leave the default location. You may then click Next.

  8. Create a Start Menu folder by clicking Next.

  9. Make sure that Create a desktop icon is checked and click Next.

  10. Start the installation by clicking Install.

  11. Once installation is complete, make sure the Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checkbox is checked. It is also strongly recommended to uncheck the box for Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium.

Running a Scan

  1. The updater should run automatically and update MBAM to the latest version.

  2. Open MBAM if it does not open automatically by double clicking the desktop icon.

  3. Upon running MBAM for the first time a dialogue box may appear asking if you would like to start using a trial version of the full product. Click Decline.

  4. Under the Scan tab, select Custom Scan, then click Scan Now.

  5. Confirm that all of your hard drives are checked, for most people this will just be the C:\ drive. Then click Start Scan.

  6. MBAM will now perform a full system scan which may take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours to complete.

  7. When the scan is complete...
    • Once you have run a full scan, and MBAM hasn't found any malware, you will see the window below. You can now close Malwarebytes.

    • If MBAM has found malware, you will see something similar to the window below.

Note: Your results will most likely differ from the screenshot below. Click Quarantine All to remove all items.

    • After the items have been removed, restart your computer. If you would like to save a log for Help Desk reference, click export log.

  8. Sometimes, MBAM may not be able to detect all infections unless the full scan is performed in Safe Mode. To accomplish this, follow the following directions below.

Running a Scan in Safe Mode

  1. Restart your computer

  2. While your manufacturer's logo is on screen, tap the F8 key. If Windows begins to start up, you need to restart once again and tap F8 earlier.

  3. You should be at a black screen with white text. Select Safe Mode (just Safe Mode, not Safe Mode with Networking) with the arrow keys and press Enter.

  4. It may take a bit longer than usual to load. Note that your screen will be low resolution and have fewer colors so everything will look different, but this is normal. Once at the desktop, follow Steps 2 through 6 above.

If you've run a scan in Safe Mode and you are still having issues, try the documents listed below.

Updating Malwarebytes

You should periodically update Malwarebytes to ensure you have the latest version. To do so, follow these instructions:

  2. In the Dashboard tab, click Update Now.
