As part of our mandate as a Title VI National Resource Center, the African Studies Program reaches out to students, educators, and schools across the state by connecting learning communities with speakers from our Outreach Scholars Program and/or by sharing items from our Lending Collection.
The African Studies Outreach collection contains books, videos, posters, and 7,000 slides of Africa as well as artifacts from Africa. Anyone wishing to use the collection should call the center to set up an appointment. or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Program's Outreach staff have broad backgrounds in African Studies and specialize on Africa in the curricula of kindergarten through college. The Outreach staff consults with teachers, organizes teachers' workshops, evaluates materials, and provides resources for teaching about Africa. Visits to schools and classrooms throughout Wisconsin, and in some cases other states in the Upper Midwest, can be arranged.
The African Studies Program is inspired and guided by the Wisconsin Idea to share the expertise, talents, and scholarship of the University of Wisconsin-Madison to promote the study of Africa in schools and communities across Wisconsin. With nearly fifty years of experience, we are proud of our legacy as pioneers in African Studies outreach in the Upper Midwest, and we look forward to great future partnerships with educators, business leaders, and communities.
