REDCap: Overview
SMPH REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a largely self-service, secure, web-based application used for building and managing data collection forms. REDCap provides data management functionality by allowing the development of electronic instruments and surveys to support data capture for research studies, including those that involve protected health information (PHI). REDCap can also be used to collect data for quality improvement and operational support projects.
REDCap provides:
-
- An intuitive interface (with optional data validation for data captured on forms and surveys).
- Audit trails for tracking data manipulation and export procedures.
- Export procedures for seamless data downloads to common statistical packages (e.g. SPSS, SAS, Stata, & R).
- Reporting capabilities.
- Procedures for importing data from external sources.
SMPH REDCap should not be used for studies conducted under an IND or IDE where REDCap will contain source data, electronic signatures, or be relied on to perform study activities (e.g., assess eligibility). It is currently not 21 CFR part 11 compliant. SMPH REDCap may be used as a data entry system for purposes of data analysis. We are working towards part 11 compliance in 2025 and will alert users once this is available.
If you are collecting data for the purposes of human subjects research, review and approval of the project is required by your Institutional Review Board. REDCap should NOT be used just as a file storage system as that is not its intended purpose.

Cost of Using SMPH REDCap
As of 01/01/2024, there is no cost for using the SMPH REDCap instance. This means the previous service agreements for research projects will no longer be needed.
There will still be an hourly cost for REDCap Administrators assisting with a project build. A project build is a specific request for the REDCap Admins to create your instruments, enter branching logic, create alerts, etc. Requesting a consult or asking general questions is not considered a project build.
Licensing and Citing
Licensing
REDCap is licensed through the REDCap Consortium. The REDCap Constortium is comprised of institutional partners representing Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) institutions and other research oriented centers and facilities around the world.
Citing
REDCap users are asked to cite the publication below in study manuscripts. We recommend the following boilerplate language:
