WiscWeb - WordPress UW Theme - Google XML Sitemaps Plugin

Google XML Sitemaps allows your WordPress site to have a sitemap to be created and shared with search engines to potentially improve search engine results. Google and other search engines can read this file and add the defined pages to their index.

What Is Google XML Sitemaps

The Google XML Sitemaps plugin generates a sitemap of your site that can be used as an indexing tool for search engines. To request activation of this plugin, you must complete the Customer Support Form and choose "Plugin Activation Request."

Once the plugin is activated, there are several settings that you would need to be aware of and update. To access these settings, hover your mouse over the Settings section and click on XML-Sitemap. You can also review the plugin FAQ / Help section here: https://www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/help/

Settings

Please be aware that only site administrators can get access to the XML-Sitemap settings section. Below are some of the settings that are recommended to be reviewed or edited. If not directly instructed, please consider leaving the default settings in place.

Basic Options

"Update Notifications" settings try to automatically notify search engines when there are new items published or edited, allowing the sitemap to again be used to re-index a site.

Post Priority

Set this value to "Do not use automatic priority calculation." Most WiscWeb sites have commenting disabled by default. Setting this value will give all posts (and pages) the same priority when indexing.

Sitemap Content

This section allows you to choose any custom items that should be included in the sitemap and also be part of the indexing. The base UW Theme, as well as some sites with customizations, have additional items such as CategoriesFaculty Types, and Event Categories that will need to be manually checked if you would like those to be indexed as well. Be sure to check or uncheck any items that you do not want to be part of the index.

Excluded Items

You can choose to have some items not indexed as part of the sitemap, either using specific categories or specific posts.

Change Frequencies

Provides guidance to how often a search engine should attempt to crawl your site. Please note: This is not a guaranteed setting, and rather provides a request more than a command.

Priorities

Similar to Change Frequencies, you can provide search engines with a relative priority of the content within your site. It is recommended to leave these items as the default settings.
