Note: We almost exclusively use the Education Data Hierarchy, and the Clinical Data Hierarchy is not used at all.
Data Hierarchy - Education
The education data hierarchy consists of four levels of organization.
Courses
--Lessons
----Specimens
------eSlides
These are nested just like folders on your computer. At the top level there are courses. Within courses are lessons. Within lessons are specimens. Within specimens are eSlides.
These four levels of organization are hard coded into Aperio eSlide Manager and we can't change it. We have to use exactly four levels.
When you first login and are presented with the icons for courses, lessons, specimens, and eSlides, there's no reason to click on anything other than courses. If you go to lessons, you'll be looking at hundreds of lessons and it will be very difficult to find anything. Same things with going to specimens or eSlides. Because all lessons belong to some course, it makes more sense to start at the course level.
Example
Course: BIP Conference
The course "BIP Conference" is for the weekly BIP tumor board. Within the BIP Conference, there are several lessons.
Lessons BIP Conference 2017-07-28, BIP Conference 2017-07-21, BIP Conference 2017-07-14.Each week's BIP tumor board is a separate lesson.
If you go into lesson "BIP Conference 2017-07-28" there are several specimens.
Specimens Case 1, Case 2, Case 3, Case 4, Case 5. Each case is a separate specimen.
If you go into specimen "Case 1", there are several eSlides.
eSlides SXX-YYYYY, SBB-NNNNN.
So when you're looking for specific slides, start by finding the course that they would likely be stored under.
Most of the courses are for specific tumor boards/conferences. One course that differs significantly from the others and warrants further explanation is the Resident Education course.
Resident Education Course
The Resident Education course is a curated collection of slides that have been selected by faculty for permanent storage because of their educational value. All slides chosen for the Resident Education course MUST have a
taxonomic string assigned to them. The taxonomic string is required so that all slides in the Resident Education course can be easily searched and identified.
Lessons: CK Chang - GI, Curriculum - GI, PIP, Surgical Pathology Unknowns
The number and variety of "Lessons" will increase as more slides are assigned taxonomic strings and scanned.
As they are now, there will be lessons for the various CK Chang boxes, Curriculum boxes, PIP collections, and Surgical Pathology Unknown slides.
