SIS/Building Your Schedule of Classes - Class Associations

logo

This document provides diagrams that show examples of class associations. This includes the section number and the association number, and how they are related depending upon how students are able to enroll in the class sections.

  • When you create a section, you have to include an appropriate Association number.
  • Multiple versions exist for setting up courses and auto enrolls
  • Below, are common examples of course set-ups. This is not an exhaustive list, so please contact your Curricular Services representative with any questions, or any scenarios now listed here.

Lecture Only

  • Any lecture could be Honors
three circles with Lec and Assoc

This set up is shown in the example below, for Math 113:

Update Sections of a Class page in SIS with only Lectures listed

One Lecture with Multiple Required Discussions

  • Discussions are Required
  • Discussions are Graded Component and Enrollment Component
  • Discussions auto enroll into Lecture
  • Any discussion could be Honors

three circles with Disc and Assoc pointing to a circle that states Lec and Assoc

This example is displayed in the course below. Students select their discussion, which auto enrolls into Lecture 001:
examples of one lecture with multiple required discussions showing one lecture class section and four discussion sections

One to One Correlation between Lectures and Discussions

  • Lecture is Graded Component
  • Discussion is Required
  • Discussion is Enrollment Component
  • Any discussion/lecture package could be Honors

three sets of two circles where one circle says Disc and Assoc then points to a circle that states Lec and Assoc

The course below is an example of 5 different Discussions which auto enroll into 5 different (and specified) Labs:
Example in SIS Class Sections page of One to One Correlation

One Lecture with Multiple Discussions and Labs

  • Discussions and Labs are Required
  • Lab is Graded Component
  • Lab is Enrollment Component
  • Labs auto enroll into Discussions and Lecture
  • Any enrollment package could be Honors
Seven circles where there are three that state Lab and Assoc and point to three circles that state Disc and Assoc and those point to one that says Lec and Assoc

An example of this is Chemistry 115, where the enrollment section is the Lab, which auto enrolls into a Discussion, and then Lecture 001:
Example in Class Sections in SIS that shows two labs, two discussions and one lecture

Multiple Lectures with Choice of Required Discussions

  • Discussions and Lectures are Required
  • Discussions are Graded Component and Enrollment Component
  • There is no Auto Enroll
  • Any discussion could be Honors
  • The enrollment system will prompt the student to select the additional required component (e.g. lecture)

seven circles and two state Lec and Assoc the other five state Disc and Assoc

An example of this is Anthropology 100, where students enroll in a Discussion and then may choose either Lecture. There are no auto enrolls:
Example in Class Sections in SIS with two Lectures and five discussions

Lecture with Choice of Optional Discussions

  • Lecture is Graded Component and the Enrollment Component
  • Discussion is Optional and any discussion may be made Honors*
  • The enrollment system will prompt the student to select the additional optional component
  • Lecture and Discussions must be the same association
four unconnected circles with three stating Disc and Assoc and one stating Lec and Assoc
*If the Honors component is optional, then the entire course will need to be available for Honors Optional, as seen on Class Associations - Class Components tab. Use a Class Note on the Notes tab of Maintain Schedule of Classes page to notify students of the honors status and what components are required. See also: Adding Honors designations
