DoIT Data Services

DoIT Repair offers the following data services to students, faculty, staff, and departments. Departments should contact us at repair@doit.wisc.edu if they have larger recovery jobs, including multiple drive failure or RAID failure.

Data Transfer

We offer data backup services for working, fully-operating data storage devices such as hard drives, USB flash drives, SD cards, etc. The process involves either cloning the entire drive or simply the transfer of user data (documents, music, photos etc), which does NOT include the operating system(s) or programs. Our ability to perform a clone versus transfer of user data varies from device to device and can only be determined after technician evaluation.

Data Recovery

We offer data recovery services for data storage devices suffering from data corruption, unintentional data overwrites, or accidental file deletion. We do not offer any guarantees for successful data recovery, as every device may behave differently when connected to our recovery machines. Given the instability of failing drives, data recovery does not recover operating systems or programs. In instances of mechanical failure, we may refer the customer to a more specialized data recovery facility if we believe they will have a better chance of success.

Data Destruction

If you are disposing of a computer or selling it to someone else, we can wipe your hard drive(s) clean of all data. The process destroys all operating systems, programs, and personal data from the drive, leaving a blank slate behind. If the hard drive is failing and you no longer need it, we can recycle the drive for you through the DoIT Recycling Program (personal devices only).
