Teaching Assistant - How to Hire
This document describes how to hire a Teaching Assistant.

Overview
This title is appropriate for graduate students who have been assigned teaching responsibilities in an instructional program under the supervision of a faculty member of the academic staff. The following steps are where to post for the Teaching Assistant position (if you don’t have an individual in mind) and what information is needed for your HR Generalist to draft an appointment letter.
Step 1: Recruitment through UW-Madison Student Job Board (skip to step 2 if you have a student you would like to hire)
- Post the position on the Student Job board site: https://studentjobs.wisc.edu/postuw/
- Frequently asked questions for the student job board are at the bottom of the page.
- Questions about the posting (I.e. changing details, the system itself) contact Student Employment at student.employment@finaid.wisc.edu
- Review applicants, interview, select and verbally offer the position to the candidate.
- Inform your HR Generalist about the individual you would like to hire.
Step 2: Gather Basic Info and Send it to Russell HR to be able to Draft Appointment Letter
Please gather the following information and send it to your Russell Labs HR generalist:
- Course name and number
- Course instructor
- Semester(s) the candidate will TA
- FTE level
- Funding
Step 3: HR will Send Appointment Letter to Individual and CC Supervisor
- With information provided above, HR will draft the appointment letter and email it to the individual and CC the supervisor
- Once the individual has returned a signed copy of the appointment letter, HR will proceed with completing the new hire paperwork (if a previous position was not held.

- Benefits (if eligible)
