Use of New Media

Use of New Media

When using new media - such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs, chats, etc. - as a part of your research study, be sure that your research activities and procedures do not violate the site(s)' privacy agreement or terms of use.  Please note: if you are only recruiting via social media then "Use of New Media" does not need to be selected in the Special Procedures section.

Other issues to consider, if your project includes the use of new media:

- Describe applicable consent and assent proccesses, or provide an adequate justification for a waiver of consent or documentation of consent;

- Provide a clear description of what the unit of analysis is;

- Consider the expectation of privacy of subjects and participants using the new media.

For more information, please review the IRB office's guidelines on research involving technology and new media
