IRB Insider

Education and Social/Behavioral Science Institutional Review Board (ED/SBS IRB) Newsletter, IRB Insider / Volume 5, Issue 1, September 2016

Most members of UW-Madison’s research community are aware that a site visit from Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) was scheduled for Summer 2016. UW-Madison's human subjects program was first accredited in 2008, and re-accredited in 2011.  The AAHRPP site visit took place August 10-12.  Prior to the site visit, AAHRPP reviewed UW-Madison’s policies and procedures to ensure that they met AAHRPP'S accreditation standards.  Sincere thanks to the faculty, staff and researchers who were interviewed as part of the site visit. The team of site visitors spoke very highly of not only our program, but the extremely professional individuals who are a part of it.

Training and Outreach Sessions

The ED/SBS IRB office offers an outreach/training curriculum throughout the year.  We hold various training sessions tailored to a particular topic.  The following are the upcoming trainings for Fall 2016:

  • IRB 101: An Introduction to the IRB on September 28 at 10:30 a.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137
  • IRB 200: Consent Considerations on October 25 at 10 a.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137
  • IRB 103: How to Avoid Delays in the IRB Approval Process on December 8 at 2 p.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137
For more information about these trainings and to register, visit the IRB Training Sessions page of our website.

Another facet of our curriculum is tailored to outreach sessions for classes, groups, or departments,  IRB staff would be happy to come to a department meeting, research methods class, or hold a brown bag session to help faculty, staff, students, and other researchers learn more about the IRB process.  We can also address specific topics such as international research, research on campus, research with minors, technology-based research, etc.  To schedule an outreach event, please visit the Outreach Sessions page of our website.

Non-UW Personnel

At the start of each semester, the ED/SBS IRB office fields a number of questions regarding Study Team members who have left UW-Madison. The IRB does not automatically assume IRB oversight for non-UW personnel who will continue to be involved in an approved study. Feel free to contact the assigned Staff Reviewer to discuss the options that are available. In most cases, the first step is for the individual who has left the UW to check with their new institution to discuss how that organization prefers to handle IRB oversight. It's possible that the study will be transferred to the new site and the UW-Madison study will close. In some cases, UW-Madison may agree to serve as the IRB of Record for the individual via an IRB Authorization Agreement (IAA) if the study is still active here.

ARROW Outage

ARROW will be unavailable Saturday, September 24th from 1 PM - 7 PM for upgrades and maintenance. As usual, ARROW will be made available to users as soon as the upgrade completes.  If you have questions, please email: Thank you in advance for your patience.

Due to my schedule, I can't come to drop-in hours.  Can I still meet with someone?

Absolutely!  While we welcome individuals who stop-in outside of drop-in hours, it is possible that IRB staff may not be available.  Instead, we strongly recommend sending us an email or giving us a call to set up an appointment if drop-in hours do not work.  Our contact information can be found here.  **If you are working with a Staff Reviewer on a study, please contact that reviewer.  For general questions, email or call any one of us.
