1Password - Copy Your Passwords from LastPass
Important Notes
- The 1Password Import Tool is the recommended way to copy your passwords from LastPass into 1Password. The Import Tool ensures passwords are encrypted throughout the process.
-
Alternatively, exporting your data from LastPass creates a plain-text file containing all your passwords. Ensure this file is securely stored and deleted after use.
-
After importing your individual passwords, verify they are accurate in 1Password and delete them from LastPass to prevent duplicate imports. Do not delete the contents of Shared Folders until you’ve verified their migration into 1Password.

Map user email addresses
- Select to map Shared Folder permissions if users have different email addresses in 1Password than in LastPass.
Shared Folder Permissions
When you import Shared Folders from LastPass:
- Each Shared Folder is converted into a Vault, and all items in the folder are copied.
- Permissions are applied based on LastPass settings:
LastPass Permission | 1Password Permission |
---|---|
Administer | Manage Vault |
Read-only | View Items |
Hide passwords | Removes “View and Copy Passwords” |
Shared Folder permissions are not imported if:
- The user or group no longer exists in 1Password.
- The user is an external LastPass user.
To re-import permissions, run the import process again and select Only import folder sharing permissions.
Email Address Mapping
If users have different email addresses in 1Password than in LastPass:
- Select Map user email addresses during the import process.
- Upload a CSV file that includes one mapping per line, formatted as
old email,new email
. For example:wendy.appleseed@wisc.edu,wappleseed@wisc.edu
johnny.appleseed@wisc.edu,jappleseed2@wisc.edu
This option is available only to LastPass Shared Folder administrators.
For security reasons, the import process doesn’t preserve individual administrative access to specific LastPass folders for people whose email addresses have changed. You can find instances of dropped administrative access by looking in your 1Password logs for messages similar to the following:
Dropping 'manage vault' permission of user from line 10 of the user mappings CSV from vault 'VAULT-UUID'
Troubleshooting

-
Navigate to Account Settings > Show Advanced Settings, and check Disable Email Verification.
-
Save the changes and try the import again.
