While you use 1Password university account to access credentials you need to do your job or to keep your university-related secrets safe, we know that there are credentials in your personal life that need protecting as well. That's why, as a user of 1Password at UW-Madison, you can redeem a free 1Password Families account so you can stay as safe at home as you are at work. The complimentary 1Password Families membership can be shared with your family.

To redeem your free membership, link your family account to your business account. Only your subscription status will be linked. No other information is shared.

An additional option to redeem a free 1Password families (aka Unmanaged) account without needing an enterprise account will be available in 2025. 1Password - Managed vs Unmanaged Accounts

Redeem your free 1Password Families membership

To redeem your free 1Password Families membership:

1. Sign in to your university account on uw-madison.1password.com.
2. Click your name in the top right and choose My Profile.
3. In the “Claim your free family account” section, click Redeem Now.

To sign up for 1Password Families and redeem your free membership, click Sign Up. Make sure to use your personal email address when you create your family account.

To apply your free membership to an existing account, click Apply to existing account. Then sign in to your family account and click Apply. If you sign in to an individual account, you’ll be asked if you want to convert it to a family account.

Your 1Password Families membership will remain active as long as it’s linked to your business account. If you’re preparing to leave your team, you can unlink your family account and add a payment method to keep using it. Learn more about the cost for 1Password Families.

• Can the university access my 1Password family account?
  • Your linked Family account belongs solely to you, not UW-Madison, and your information is even kept private from the team at 1Password. Admins on the university's 1Password enterprise account will only be able to see if you have redeemed the free family membership offering.
• What happens if I leave UW-Madison?
  • When you depart from the university, your 1Password university account will be suspended. This will unlink your 1Password Family account which will remain active for 14 days. You'll receive an email letting you know that during these 14 days you'll be able to either add your own payment method to continue actively using this Family account, or you can export your data if you chose. Even after the 14 day period, when your Family account enters a frozen state, you'll still always have read-only access and your data will remain safe.
• What if I already have a personal 1Password account?
  • You can link an existing 1Password account to use it for free when you're part of the university's 1Password Enterprise account!
• If I need help with my Families 1Password account, where should I go?
  • If you need further assistance, 1Password offers a lot of helpful resources in their customer support knowledge base, and you can always contact 1Password customer support.
• Will I get a refund if I have already paid for a Families account when connecting it to a university account?
  • • By default a prorated credit will be applied to the your 1Password Families account when you link it to your university account.

Get help

If your existing family account and your university account are in different regions, you can still link them. After you click Apply to existing account, click Sign in to another account at the bottom of the page, then choose the region for your family account in the dropdown menu.

If you started a subscription for your existing individual or family account using an in-app purchase on your Apple or Android device, and you can’t redeem your free membership, contact 1Password Support for help.

If your family account becomes frozen, make sure that you see your linked family on My Profile in your university account

If you leave the university account or are removed from it, your family account will be unlinked from it, and it will enter into a complimentary trial period. You can add a payment method to start a 1Password Families subscription. Learn more about the cost for 1Password Families.

Linked family accounts share only their subscription status with the university account. Ownership and access rights aren’t shared. A linked family account belongs to the family organizer, and the university can’t access or manage it.
