1Password - Get Help: Resolving Frequent Unlock and Re-Authentication Issues in 1Password

MacOS and iOS users may notice that 1Password locks more frequently than configured via Auto-lock.

Update Auto-Lock Settings First

If you haven’t updated your auto-lock settings on all devices, start there. For detailed instructions on updating auto-lock settings, visit 1Password - Update Auto-lock Settings. If 1Password still locks more frequently than expected, continue reading.

Frequent Unlock Issue

1Password can be configured to delay automatic locking, but on macOS and iOS, it may appear to lock more frequently than set in auto-lock settings.

Cause & Recommendation

This occurs because MacOS/iOS keychain access is restricted when the screensaver activates or the device locks. Since 1Password relies on this keychain to sync with 1Password.com, it may prompt for NetID re-authentication when access is unavailable.

1Password checks the keychain approximately every 40 minutes, which can result in multiple re-authentication prompts per day. 1Password is exploring alternative solutions to this behavior.

Unlock Error Issue

Another issue occurs when the re-authentication window appears, but attempting to sign in via the Sign in with NetID Login button results in an error.

Workaround & Recommendation

To resolve this:

  1. Close the re-authentication prompt, which locks the app.

  2. Reopen the app and use the Sign in with NetID link—it should now work.

To prevent this issue, adjust settings so 1Password locks when your device locks or sleeps. This prevents 1Password from attempting to sync while the device is locked, reducing authentication errors.
