Windows - Backing Up the Registry

Warning: Incorrect changes to the registry can cause your system to stop functioning. It is important to always backup the Windows registry prior to making any changes to it.

Potential for data loss CAUTION: Please make sure your important data is backed-up to Bucky Backup or an external storage device (such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive) before attempting this procedure. DoIT assumes no liability for data loss that occurs as a result of this procedure.

Windows 7, 8, and Vista

  1. Press Start to open the Windows Start menu.

  2. Type regedit, and click on the program named regedit.exe. Note: For Windows 8 type regedit from the Metro screen, and hit Enter.

  3. In the Registry Editor, make sure that Computer is selected.

  4. Click File to open the drop-down menu, and then select Export...

  5. Set a File name for your file, and change the Export range to All

  6. Click Save.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start to open the Start menu.

  2. Then select Run...

    Click Start and then select Run

  3. In the Open text box, type regedit; then press Enter.

  4. Click OK.

  5. In the Registry Editor, make sure that My Computer is selected.

  6. Click File to open the drop-down menu, and select Export...

  7. Set a File name for your file, and change the Export range to All

  8. Click Save.

Windows 10

  1. Press Start to open the Start menu.

  2. Type regedit, and click on the result named regedit.exe. Note: For Windows 8 type regedit from the Metro screen, and hit Enter.
