WiscWeb - "There is an autosave of this post" or "Backup in your browser is different" errors

By default, WordPress will auto-save any work that you completed on a page after a few seconds - even if you don't save or publish. If you leave that page and come back (without saving or publishing), WordPress may display an alert that reads either: "There is an autosave of this post..." or "Backup in your browser is different." You won't be able to clear these by clicking the "x."

Issue

If a user makes edits to a page without clicking the Save or Publish button, WordPress will auto-save the work after several seconds. If you exit that page without publishing the edits and go back in, you may see one of two messages:

  • "There is an autosave of this post that is more recent than the version below."
  • "Backup in your browser is different."

If you click the "x" to clear the alert, it will come back the next time you enter the page until you officially publish or re-publish the edits.

Understanding if your post or page was auto-saved

A good way to know if your post or page was autosaved is to look in the top right corner of the screen. An auto-save will be denoted with a gray checkmark with the word "Saved" next to it.

Resolution

To clear the message, make edits to the page and either click Save or Publish.
