Directory Search (Mac) - Configuring Apple Mail 10.8 for White Pages

This service can be used to look up email addresses based on names as they appear in the University Directory Search.

Important Note
IMPORTANT:

These procedures have been written for the latest version of this client. If you have problems configuring your client, please update your software to the latest version before contacting the Help Desk.

BUG: There is a known bug with some versions of Apple Mail which causes a duplication of the middle name within the search result list. This issue has been reported to Apple, but there is no workaround at this time. It does not affect the functionality of Apple Mail or directory searches.

Configuring Apple Mail

  1. Open Apple Mail.
  2. Click on the Mail tab in the top menu bar. 
  3. From the drop-down menu, select Preferences...
  4. Select Composing.
  5. Check the box next to Automatically complete addresses.
  6. Click on Configure LDAP...
  7. Then click on the plus (+) button.
  8. In the Server Info window, enter the information from the bullet points below in their respective textboxes. Note: The bolded characters below are only for guidance purposes—do not include these when entering information in the Server Info boxes. See the example image included with step 9 for a visual of how these textboxes should be formatted.
    • Name: Directory Search
    • Server: ldap.services.wisc.edu
    • Port: 389
    • Search Base: dc=wisc,dc=edu
  9. The following elements do not need to be altered:
    • Leave the checkbox next to Use SSL empty—do not check it.
    • Leave the Authentication drop-down set to None.
    • Leave the User name and Password textboxes empty—do not enter any information for these elements.

  10. Click Save.
  11. Then click Done.
  12. Close the Mail Preferences pane by clicking on the red button in the upper left-hand corner. Apple Mail is now configured to use the LDAP (now NIDU) server.
