NetID Login - "Stale Request" Error in Safari

This document describes how to fix a stale request error in Safari.

When you are attempting to log in to a UW-Madison service or attempting to access a link that requires NetID authentication, you may receive a "Stale Request" error; sometimes this error window may read, "Sorry, there was a problem." This error can occur if cookies are blocked while browsing Safari on MacOS or iOS. Instructions on how to unblock cookies are outlined in the panels below.

Note: This document is only applicable to Safari. If you are using a different web browser or these instructions fail to work, use the following instructions: NetID Login - How to Fix a "Stale Request" Error.

Safari on macOS

  1. In the upper left-hand menu bar, select Safari and then Settings...

  2. In the window that appears, select the Advanced tab and uncheck the Block all cookies option.

  3. Completely close Safari. If these steps do not fix the issue after restarting Safari, follow the steps in NetID Login - How to Fix a "Stale Request" Error, or use a different browser.

Safari on iOS

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll down or search to find Safari. If you are using a device operating on a newer version of iOS, you may have to first navigate to the Apps tab within Settings and select Safari.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. Make sure that Block All Cookies is toggled off.
  5. Close Safari and try again. If these steps do not fix the issue after restarting Safari, follow the steps in NetID Login - How to Fix a "Stale Request" Error, or try a different browser. Browsers such as Chrome and Firefox are available to download from the App Store.
