DoIT Shared Tools - JIRA - Use of UDDS

This article discusses the current use of UDDS numbers and UDDS JIRA User Groups.

Current use of UDDS Numbers

When users authenticate to DoIT JIRA, their current UDDS numbers are part of that process. Specifically, at login, each user is checked for the SHIB attribute eduWisconsinUDDS (which contains the user's UDDS).

The image below shows a User Profile with UDDS numbers highlighted in red. The JIRA User groups are in purple.

JIRA User Groups and UDDS Numbers

In the past, JIRA Super-Admins could:

  • Create JIRA User Groups based on UDDS numbers

Then, JIRA Project Admins could:

  • Add the UDDS User Groups to a specific role in their project (subsequently allowing access to everyone associated with that specific number)

In May of 2022, the DoIT Shared Tools team added a new authentication plugin. The new plugin does not support UDDS User Groups.

This means:

      • JIRA Super-Admins will not be creating any new UDDS JIRA User Groups

      • Current JIRA users who have UDDS JIRA User Groups will still work as expected

      • However, brand new users will not be included in already created UDDS JIRA User Groups as they will NOT be refreshed.

In February 2024, when DoIT JIRA (Server) moves to Jira (Cloud), the DoIT Shared Tools team will completely discontinue the use of UDDS JIRA User Groups.

How to add users into my JIRA Project

1.  Is the user brand new to DoIT JIRA? If so, follow the instructions in this document, DoIT Shared Tools - JIRA - New User Self-Enrollment and Access

2. Is the user new to your JIRA Project, but already has an account in JIRA? If so, follow the instructions in this document, DoIT Shared Tools - JIRA - Add Users to Project via Roles
