Office 365 Groups

1. Increased privacy for UW-Madison Office 365 Groups

Per campus IT Partner feedback, the UW-Madison Office 365 Team implemented the following privacy settings for Office 365 Groups:

  1. Hide a group and group members from the GAL
  2. By default, when a Microsoft Group is created, the Group and its members are visible within Global Address List (GAL). Anyone within UW-Madison's implementation of Office 365 will be able to search for and see the members of any Group. You now have the ability to control these two features of a Group.

  3. Prevent non-members from emailing group
  4. By default, when a Microsoft Group is created, anyone with a UW-Madison Office 365 account can send a message/email to the Group. If you want to only allow Group members to send messages/emails to the Group, use the steps below to make this request.

Wisc Account Admin site

1. Stage SPF records using "DMARC Info" tool

If you administer a domain in the Wisc Account Admin site, you will have the option to stage your domain's DNS SPF records using the DMARC Info tool.

This tool uses a list of observed IPs sending from your domain to aid you in the staging process.

It is also used to help you secure your domain(s) using DMARC.

DMARC Info tool

  • Log into WiscVPN
  • Log into https://email.wisc.edu/admin
  • Click on Delegated Administration
  • Click on your domain
  • Click on Domain Administration
  • Click on DMARC Info

If you would like assistance managing your DNS SPF records, please contact the DoIT Help Desk and request that they escalate your case to the O365 Technical Functional team.

2. “Authorize Send As address” tool removed

As of October 30th, the ability to authorize your account to Send As an external email address (e.g., Gmail) was removed from the Wisc Account Admin site and the Domain Admin API.

Why?

This tool uses SMTPAuth to authorize you to use your Office 365 account to send as an external email address (e.g., Gmail). Removing this option reduces the risk of your email being treated as spam by third party email providers (e.g., Gmail).

Please note, existing Send As authorizations have not been removed and will not be affected by this change.
