Two Sound Booths

Please use these booths only for recording. Editing can be done on one of the iMacs outside the booth.

Booth 1 contains an iMac and microphone.

Green Screen

The green screen is 8′ x 8′. Camera and lighting may be checked out from the Journalism Reading Room if needed.

This room contains an AV system with a large television, and multiple smaller screens around the room. Above the main screen is a camera for video conferencing. The room also has ceiling speakers and a microphone.

Using the TVs

To use the system tap "Touch to Begin" on the touch screen on the podium.

To use the iMac at the teacher station tap iMac, or connect your own device by selecting one of the other available sources. There are two extra HDMI cables that are labeled with the name of the input.

The smaller screens can be used independently of the main display. Plug your device in to the HDMI port below the TV you want to use and your device will replace what is being presented. You can also plug in your device to a smaller screen without having to turn on the main system. The connection will be detected and the screen will turn on for you.

Using the camera

To use the camera you must connect the USB-C cable to your device. In your conferencing software choose the room AV as your sources for microphone, speaker, and camera. The sources are named CR <room number> Room Devices.

Troubleshooting

If you have no audio from your computer to the room speakers make sure you have selected the correct output on your device. On your Mac click the Control Center icon, then Sound, and finally select the correct output device (it will be something like HMDI, Crestron, Extron, CR 2111).

If you are plugged in to one of the displays and all you see is a desktop background you need to turn on mirroring. Tap Command + F1 or select System Preferences -> Displays. Control+click on the larger screen and select Mirror for Built-in Display.

2112 Vilas Hall contains 5 iMacs (see Lab/Shared Apple Macs at SJMC for information), a TV with wireless AV capabilities, and a printer.

Wireless AV Connection

 

No extra software is needed, but your device needs to be up to date. Before connecting make sure all software is current.

Apple Devices

Make sure your device is connected to the eduroam or UWNet wireless networks.

Click the Control Center icon in your menubar, or swipe down from the upper right corner of the screen on your iPhone or iPad, then click Screen Sharing

Select your room number from the list of choices.

Finally, enter the 4 digit code that appears on the room television.

To disconnect go back to the Screen Mirroring menu and click your room number again.

Troubleshooting

If no devices appear in the Screen Mirroring list make sure your device has Bluetooth turned on. Bluetooth is used to discover the wireless display devices.

If audio is not coming out of the display speakers make sure the volume is not too low or muted.

If audio is coming from your computer change the output by selecting Sound in Control Center, then select the display you are connected to.

Connect the USB-C video adapter to your device. There is no need to adjust the other plugs in the adapter, they can be left plugged in.

Tap the touchscreen to open the controls, select HDMI, then select Send To All to send your screen to the TVs. Connecting the USB connection to your laptop and turning on the TVs will activate the camera.

If there is no audio make sure the Mute button is not selected (Red means muted. In the image above the audio is muted), and your computer is sending audio through the HDMI connection (see Troubleshooting below).

Using the camera

2195 Vilas has a camera in the back of the room that can auto-track someone in the front of the room, as well as ceiling microphones for audio. These are intended to be used with a conferencing tool like Zoom. The camera can follow the presenter as they walk around the room, and the ceiling microphones allow everyone in the room to be heard by remote participants.

In your video conferencing software select the room AV:

Microphone: AV Bridge
Speaker: Extron HDMI
Video: AV Bridge

The camera will lock on to, then auto-track the person in the front of the room. The camera feed may just be a blue screen when you first select it. Wait a few seconds and it will correct itself.

The ceiling microphones will pick up audio and send it to your conferencing software. The microphones in the room will also continue to work, sending audio to your conferencing software, and amplifying your voice within the room.

Room 5011

To use the screen in 5011 you must first power it on with the remote. Once powered on tap the Input button and choose the desired input.

Inputs:

  • HDMI 1 - Cynap wireless conection
  • HDMI 2 - Mac mini with Logitech Meetup camera
  • HDMI 3 - local HDMI cable

HDMI 2 - Mac mini with Logitech Meetup camera

The Mac mini is the same as all other shared computers at the SJMC. Instructions for use are are at Lab/Shared Apple Macs at SJMC.

There is a keyboard and mouse on the table. When not in use please plug one of the devices in to the lightning cable so they remain charged.

The Logitech Meetup camera is connected to the Mac mini. 

In your conferencing software set the following:

  • Camera: Logitech Meetup
  • Microphone: Logitech Meetup
  • Speaker: Logitech Meetup

In macOS you will need to give your conferencing software permission to use the camera and microphone. Be sure to click OK when these messages pop up.

If you share your screen you will need to give the application Screen Recording permission. Connect to a meeting and select Share Screen.

You will be prompted to Open System Preferences. settings
Toggle the button for your conferencing software to on.

You then need to quit the software and relaunch it.

HDMI 3 - local HDMI cable

The cable is to the left of the TV on the table, with a USB-C adapter if your device requires it.

5013 Vilas Hall (McLeod Room)

The camera has built in microphones, and speakers. It is controlled by a touch screen on the table.

There is an HDMI connection on the wall directly below the television. Connect the HDMI cable in the room to your device and the television should mirror your display.

Tap the small touch screen between the two TVs to wake it.

Wired Connection

Select “Wall Plate 2” on the touch screen between the two TVs for this option. Do not select "Wall Plate 1" or "Wall Plate 3", they are not connected to anything.

Connect the USB-C adapter in the podium to your device. The USB-C adapter can be used with Mac or Windows devices. The cables are labeled in the image below. Just plug the USB-C connection to your device, there is no need to unplug or adjust any of the other plugs.

You may receive a message on your Mac asking to approve the connection, be sure to click allow.

USB-C hub connections

This will connect the displays, as well as the speakers, microphones, and camera in the back of the room. This option is the only way to use the camera and microphones with applications like Zoom or Teams. After plugging in the USB-C cable you will likely need to wait up to 20 seconds for the displays and other hardware to initialize. Select the proper input/output devices within the meeting software on your laptop for them to work.

Wireless Connection

The wireless option will give you audio and video from your device to the screens. Select Solstice Wireless on the touch panel. The wireless device is no longer Solstice, but panel has not been updated yet. You do not need the Solstice software.

Follow the directions in the Vilas Hall Wireless AV KB.

Advanced Camera Use

screen image When Wall Plate 2 is selected you can tap the Autotracking button to enable/disable the feature. With Autotracking off you can use the control buttons to manually move the camera to remain on a specific subject.

Troubleshooting

If you have no audio from your computer to the room speakers make sure you have selected the correct output on your device. On your Mac click the Control Center icon, then Sound, and finally select the correct output device (Crestron 420 for room speakers). See video below demonstrating that.

If you are plugged in to one of the displays and all you see is a desktop background you need to turn on mirroring. Select System Preferences -> Displays. Control+click on the larger screen and select Mirror for Built-in Display. See video below demonstrating that.

Finally, just reboot. This solves 99% of problems.
