Use the instructions below to check for updates. If you still receive a VPN Device Compliance Notice and no updates are found, please verify that your device is capable of running a vendor supported operating system that receives security updates.

Windows 10 Extended Security Updates - Microsoft offers a program to extend support for certain versions of Windows 10. For personally-owned devices support is available until October 12, 2027 and more information is available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/extended-security-updates. For university-owned or managed devices, please contact your local/departmental IT support staff for more information.
Real-Time, Current Antivirus
Below are examples of free antivirus products that meet the UW-Madison Security Policy Standard when real-time protection is enabled and definitions are current. If you use a product not listed here, consult your vendor’s documentation to verify it meets these requirements.

macOS
macOS includes built-in antivirus technology called XProtect.
For additional protection, Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac is available for faculty and staff personally owned devices.
Windows
Windows includes built-in antivirus technology called Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
