macOS: How to Apply Security Updates Without Upgrading Major OS Versions

This guide explains how to install required security updates for your Mac without upgrading to a major new version of macOS.

Note: UW-Madison - IT - Endpoint Management and Security Policy Standards require keeping your Mac current with security updates. Applying updates keeps your device compliant while minimizing software compatibility issues that can happen during major upgrades. However, in some cases Apple may only provide security patches for the latest OS version or may release the security patches for older versions at a later date.

Understanding Updates vs. Upgrades

Think of software changes in two categories: small routine fixes vs. big whole-system overhauls.

  • Minor Update (Recommended): Changes the numbers after the dot (e.g., macOS 15.6.1 to macOS 15.7.7).
    • What it does: Fixes bugs and security holes.
    • What to do: Install these right away to keep your Mac safe. They generally won't cause software compatibility issues. 
  • Major Upgrade: Changes the first number and version name (e.g., macOS 15 Sequoia to macOS 26 Tahoe).

Before performing a Major Upgrade:

  1. Check with your local IT support to see if your core applications are ready or they are aware of reasons you should, or shouldn't, upgrade at this time.
  2. Check DoIT's KnowledgeBase for OS Compatibility Testing on the OS you are considering upgrading to for potential issues with common UW software.
  3. Verify that your software, particularly regularly used or critical applications, are compatible or for updates that provide compatibility.

How to Install Updates Only

  1. Check your current OS version:
  2. Open Software Update:
    • Open System Settings and go to General > Software Update.
  3. Locate Minor Updates:
    • If a major upgrade (e.g. macOS Tahoe 26) that does not match your major version is displayed at the top, do not click "Upgrade Now".
      • If your major version and the update version match (e.g. macOS Tahoe 26.4 and macOS Tahoe 26.5.2) click Upgrade Now to apply the most recent security updates.
    •  Scroll down to the Also Available section near the bottom.

  1. Select and Install:
    • Click Update Now in the Also Available section.
    • Alternatively, click More Info... (or the ℹ️ icon) to view individual updates.
      • Check the boxes for your current macOS version, Safari updates, and any other relevant updates you wish to apply.
      • Uncheck any major OS upgrades listed.
      • Click Update Now.
