Fix VPN Device Compliance Notice Issues
Important: If you are using a UW-Madison owned or managed device, contact your local/departmental IT support staff before applying updates, installing software, or changing any system settings.
View Device Compliance Notices
To view VPN Device Compliance Notices that apply to your device please follow the steps below. You can view example notifications at WiscVPN Device Compliance Notification Samples.
Android, ChromeOS, iOS & iPadOS
- You must be connected to the VPN to view the notices.
- Open the Palo Alto GlobalProtect client.
- Click the Notification icon (bell).
- Scroll or slide side-to-side to view multiple notifications.
- Some ChromeOS configurations may not properly display the notifications.
- Contact your local/departmental IT support or follow the instructions below to make your device compliant.
Linux, macOS & Windows
- You must be connected to the VPN to view the notices.
- Open the Palo Alto GlobalProtect client.
- Click the Menu button (hamburger icon) in the client window and select Settings.
- Select Notifications from the options on the left side of the window.
- Click the notification you wish to view.
- It may take a moment for the notification to load or you may need to scroll to view the full notification.
- The notifications may not fully display in the main window. You may need to scroll through white space and click on each available notification to view it.
- Contact your local/departmental IT support or follow the instructions below to make your device compliant.
Fix Missing Security Updates & Unsupported Operating System
Use the instructions below to check for updates. If you still receive a VPN Device Compliance Notice and no updates are found, please verify that your device is capable of running a vendor supported operating system that receives security updates.

- Update Windows
- Windows 10 Extended Security Updates - Microsoft offers a program to extend support for certain versions of Windows 10.
- For personally-owned devices support is available until October 12, 2027 and more information is available at Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU).
- For university-owned or managed devices, please contact your local/departmental IT support staff for more information.
Fix Real-Time, Current Antivirus
Below are examples of free antivirus products that meet the UW-Madison Security Policy Standard when real-time protection is enabled and definitions are current. If you use a product not listed here, consult your vendor’s documentation to verify it meets these requirements.
Linux
macOS
macOS includes built-in antivirus technology called XProtect.
For additional protection, Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac is available for faculty and staff personally owned devices.
Windows
Windows includes built-in antivirus technology called Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
