Adding a Network Printer to a Mac

Adding a SMPH Shared Services IT managed printer onto a Mac.

To print from a personally owned computer, first connect to the GlobalProtect SMPH VPN and run your lab drives script.

This process is the same for a personal Mac or a lab/group owned Mac.

NOTE: If connected via WiFi, first connect to the GlobalProtect SMPH VPN, then follow the below steps.

  • From the Apple Menu (Top-Left Apple Icon) select System Settings.
  • On the left-side option section, scroll to the bottom until you see Printers & Scanners and select it.

  • Select Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax...
    • NOTE: Admin elevation may be required to add the printer. Please contact Shared Services IT if assistance is needed.
  • On the next window, right click (Ctrl-Click) at the top area of the toolbar and click on Customize Toolbar

  • For Device:  Leave as "Another Device"
    1. URL: Use the format indicated in the screenshot

      • The portion after the last slash is the name of the printer you are trying to add. To find the name of your printer, please email Shared Services IT asking for the name of your printer desktop.support@med.wisc.edu
    2. Name: Use the printer name you entered in for the URL field or type in a name for the printer that makes sense for you, such as "Lab Printer HP Color". This will be the display name of the printer when selecting a printer to print to.
    3. Location: Put in the physical location and/or Room number of the printer.
    4. Use: Leave this as "Generic PostScript Printer".
      • Some non-HP printers may require IT to assist in downloading the specific driver for the printer.
    5. Click add.
    6. If the printer is duplex (can print double-sided), select this on the next screen when prompted.
    7. Click OK to finish adding the printer.

    Sending a Test Print

    • Double-click on the printer on the Right-hand side of the Printers & Scanners menu
    • On the Top Apple Toolbar select Printer, and then select Print Test Page
      • If the printer gets stuck on "ready to print" or becomes "paused" and does not send the test print, you may have made a typo when entering the URL. If this is the case, go back into Printers and Scanners, select the added printer, then select Remove Printer, and repeat the above steps.
