SMPH Network: Appropriate Use of HSLC IT Resources
Avoid downloading "free" software, such as games, screensavers and desktop wallpaper, from Internet sites. These sites are typically a source of spyware and viruses which can compromise security on your computer and on our local area network
Your local computer is not a secure resource. No confidential or critical data should be stored on your local desktop computer. Store work-data on either your personal network share (your MSAD Home Directory) or in your department's "Shared" folders.
Use a complex password to access the HSLC Active Directory network. Never give anyone else your password, not even HSLC IT staff.
Your departmental computer is an SMPH resource, and as such can be quarantined at any time if a security risk is detected or suspected. Your computer will be removed and scanned by IT staff, and the UW CIO Office of Cybersecurity may be notified for further action.
Staff users on the HSLC network must store all confidential or critical business files on SMPH network file storage media, for security and backup/recovery.
Do not store non-work files on the SMPH network servers, for example, family photos, downloaded music or other files of a personal nature. Be mindful of the default storage locations for programs like iTunes to avoid accidentally storing non-work data on the network. You are encouraged to use your UW-Madison BOX.com or UW-Madison Google Apps/Drive account for safe network storage of personal data files.
If you use a department-provided phone or laptop, make sure that it is password protected as well.
Your department-provided laptop must be encrypted, and kept up to date with security patches and anti-virus software updates.
If you suspect that your departmental computer has been compromised, call 4-HELP immediately and request SMPH CIT Desktop Support assistance.
