Add an SMPH Printer to a MacOS computer

Step by step instructions on adding a basic sciences lab printer to a users Mac computer.

LAB USERS: To print from personally owned MacOS computer, you must be first connected to the VPN and run the lab drives script.

Obtaining the UW Campus VPN:  https://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/90370  (download and connect)

Obtain the lab drive script and connect with it via the instructions here: https://confluence.med.wisc.edu/x/lADPAQ (download and connect)

- From the Apple Menu, select System Preferences..., then choose Printers & Scanners.
- Click the lock symbol and unlock (admin credentials) to make changes.
- Click the plus + symbol, then from the Add window, right click (control + click) within the blank area of the toolbar, choose Customize Toolbar…   (click here for example screen shot)
- Left click on Advanced, drag the gear symbol into the toolbar, then click Done.   (click here for example screen shot)
- Click on the (newly added) Advanced icon, in the toolbar section, then enter the following:   (click here for example screen shot)
Type:  LPD/LPR Host or Printer

Device:  Another Device

URL:  lpd://smph-prn.ad.wisc.edu/nameofprinter
Note: The URL should match the exact name of the printer.
Example:   lpd://smph-prn.ad.wisc.edu/smph-wimr1-6136-hall-color-HP400
Name:  can be whatever makes sense to the end user
Example: “Johnson Lab Hallway Color Printer”
Location:  Building & Room #
Example: WIMR 1 6136
Use:  Select Software, or Generic PostScript Printer

NOTE:

If there is a specific print driver (such as for the Canon copier/printers), choose "Select Software..." and search select the corresponding driver (have it installed ahead of time).


The driver can be Generic PostScript, unless there’s a specific printer driver for the Mac operating system.

- Click Add, select configuration specifics, if there are any (duplex printing, etc.), then click OK.
- Printer should now be added, send a print job to confirm.
