University Committee Meeting Minutes
Minutes approved 12/13/2021UC members present: Halverson, Masters, Papp, Sandgren (chair), Tejedo-Herrero
Others present besides those listed below: Michael Bernard-Donals, Karl Broman, Greg Bump, Michelle Felber, Matt Mayrl, Jack O’Meara, Jane Richard, Jake Smith
Chair Sandgren called the meeting to order at 1:34.
Beth Meyerand,
Vice Provost for Faculty and Staff Affairs, and Brian Fox, Associate Vice
Chancellor for Research Policy and Integrity, provided an update on the
Conflict of Commitment policy implementation. The website went live about 1
year ago to collect requests. They have received 246 and all are either under
review or been approved except for one. This request was denied due to material
conflict between the activity and faculty duties. The selection of the 2 days
reporting threshold was informed in part by the data collected through the
Outside Activity Report. The Conflict of Commitment policy has not been changed
since it became official in May. Eric Sandgren, UC chair, requested that Brian
and Beth come back to the UC in late spring for another update.
Sandgren moved to convene in closed session; it was seconded and approved at 1:59. One tenure clock extension was approved.
Sandgren moved to reconvene in open session; it was seconded and approved at 1:21.
The minutes of the meeting of November 29, 2021, were approved with one correction by consent.
Lauren Papp and Fernando Tejedo-Herrero from the University Committee continued the discussion about the use of more inclusive titles for emeritus faculty. Fernando has done some research on usage at other universities and also talked with the language working group. New titles could include something like emerit or emeritx. The University Club will discuss this further at a future meeting.
Chancellor Rebecca Blank mentioned that an article on former professor Sayeed was in the Wisconsin State Journal. He no longer works at UW-Madison. His case was one of the first considered under the Hostile and Intimidating Behavior policy for faculty.
The Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration search will launch next week, and the members of the search and screen committee for the next chancellor were announced last week.
Chair
Sandgren adjourned the meeting at 2:55.
