Procedures Governing Appeals of Decisions to Not Promote to Professor

Faculty may appeal a decision to not promote them from associate professor to professor within 20 calendar days of receiving the written decision regarding promotion to the Committee on Faculty Rights and Responsibilities (CFRR). Appeals must be based on factors indicated in UW System Administrative Code Chapter 3.08 and cannot be based on a disagreement with the decision.

Faculty wishing to submit an appeal should follow the procedures here.

Materials:

  1. Letter of appeal including:
    • Background

    • Timeline

    • Basis of appeal (which sections of UWS Administrative Code 3.08 were violated and how)
    • Remedy requested (Note: CFRR cannot grant the promotion, but rather can send the case back to the department or dean, or send it to the provost)

     2. Supporting documentation - include any documents that support your appeal. This may include:

    • Materials from your original packet

    • The dean and/or department’s statement of reasons

    • Any other relevant evidence

Submission:

These materials should be submitted either as a single combined PDF, or two separate PDFs (one for the letter, one for the supporting documents). PDF(s) containing more than one document should have a table of contents.

Please send the materials directly to the secretary of the faculty at sof@secfac.wisc.edu.
