Campus Covid-19 Update

Spring 2022 Enrollment

The deadline to enroll for Spring 2022 without a $50 late fee is Friday, January 28th. If you need to be authorized to enroll in any SoHE 990 or 999 courses, please contact enrollment@sohe.wisc.edu and our helpful colleagues will give you permission in the system. Call for abstracts: 2022 Chicago Ethnography Conference, which will take place in Madison, Wisconsin on April 2, 2022!
This is an annual graduate student conference hosted by one of several Chicago-area sociology departments, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Sociology is thrilled to host for the very first time. This conference provides a unique venue where graduate students can share their ethnographic scholarship with one another and receive feedback from faculty based in the greater Chicago area. The theme of this year’s conference is Ethnography and Qualitative Literacy: Communicating Research in Uncertain Times and we are honored to welcome Mario Luis Small and Jessica Calarco as our keynote speakers. For more information, you can visit the #CEC2022 website.

Please use this form to submit an abstract. The deadline for abstract submission is January 20, 2022. Please plan to share a full paper by March 11, 2022. Students in all academic disciplines are invited to present their original ethnographic research. We take a broad view of ethnographic research. Papers can be based on a variety of ethnographic methods, including but not limited to: field observation, in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, autoethnography, visual ethnography, participant observation, and other forms of qualitative research. Papers in all substantive areas are welcome, whether or not they directly tie into the theme. 


Name pronunciation feature added to Canvas
UW–Madison students, faculty and instructional staff are now able to record and share their name pronunciations in Canvas through a new feature called NameCoach. The new features are part of a broader, ongoing initiative focused on furthering inclusive practices and creating a welcoming environment for all.

Designing and Facilitating Effective Discussions

Discussions can engage learners in deeper thinking, foster community, and promote student motivation. In this workshop, you will develop a toolbox to design classroom discussions and facilitate learning communities.

 

Build an Inclusive Canvas Dream Course
Thursdays, 1:00pm–3:00pm starting January 27, Held remotely online
An important part of effective teaching is designing courses in learning management systems, such as Canvas, that engage students equitably and inclusively. In this course, you will explore the learning sciences and engage in peer learning to design a transparent course structure and leverage instructional technology tools that make your work more efficient — all while strongly supporting student success. While we’ll focus on Canvas, you’ll be able to transfer your new knowledge and skills to other learning management systems so you are prepared to create a stellar course the next time you teach, here or at another institution. MLK Symposium Featuring Nikole Hannah-Jones: Monday, January 25th at 6:30pm 

Join us on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m. as we welcome Nikole Hannah-Jones to the University of Wisconsin–Madison as keynote speaker for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium. Hannah-Jones will reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through the lens of her award-winning work investigating racial injustice and the consequences of slavery in American history.

 Hannah-Jones is the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of The 1619 Project, a staff writer at The New York Times Magazine, and co-founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. Her work has earned her the MacArthur Fellowship, known as the Genius grant, a Peabody Award, two George Polk Awards and the National Magazine Award three times. She is a tenured faculty member at the Cathy Hughes School of Communications at Howard University, where she serves as the newly created Knight Chair of Race and Journalism and is founding the school’s Center for Democracy & Journalism. This is an in-person event that will be streamed online. Registration is required to watch the livestream only; there are no tickets or registration for the live event. Masks will be required for the in-person event per UW policy.

Our 4W Innovators and Emerging Scholars grants program supports the work of UW-Madison faculty, staff, and graduate students.
