Research - Research Core Team: About Us

The School of Human Ecology supports the research activities of its faculty, staff, and graduate students through the Research Core Team.

Research Core Team

The Research Core Team is comprised of Lauren Papp, Associate Dean for Research and Cody Loew, Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, who provide leadership to the research enterprise at SoHE; along with research administration services from Sarah Marcotte and Sherry Huhn, who directly support researchers in pre-award and post-award activities related to grants, contracts, and other sponsored projects. The Research Core Team works together to support faculty in all aspects of their research.

Research Administration – Proposal Submission and Award Management

Sarah provides pre-award research administration support, including helping researchers with finding grant funding, developing a budget, preparing a proposal, coordinating the proposal submission, and facilitating receipt of the award by the University.

Once a grant is funded, Sherry provides post-award research administration support that includes working closely with researchers on award management as it relates to award expenditures, budget management, and financial reporting. Throughout the grant life cycle, we work to ensure compliance with University, state, federal and sponsor guidelines, and requirements. Our goal is to help you prepare the best possible proposal and, when a grant is awarded, assist you in managing it efficiently and effectively.

As you begin the steps for writing a proposal, we encourage you to review the Research Overview for Principal Investigators which summarizes the roles and responsibilities of the PI, research administrators, and Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP), the office on our campus responsible for submitting proposals on behalf of a researcher.

Planning to Submit a Proposal?

Contact Sarah Marcotte, Pre-award Research Administrator

If you’re planning to submit a proposal – start early! It can take several weeks to months to prepare a proposal to a federal agency or another external sponsor. Even small grants may require components that need additional review or coordination to meet sponsor guidelines. Sarah can assist with the following:

  • identifying funding opportunities
  • ensuring eligibility to apply to a grant program
  • creating a proposal checklist
  • preparing the budget
  • reviewing and collating non-technical aspects of the proposal
  • coordinating receipt of subaward documents
  • facilitating submission by RSP (Research and Sponsored Programs)

Managing a Grant Award

Contact Sherry Huhn, Post-Award Grants and Contracts Accountant

Once you are awarded a grant or contract for a sponsored project, Sherry will provide you with comprehensive assistance in managing award funds throughout the term of the grant, including regular reporting and award close-out. Sherry can assist with the following:

  • financial tracking
  • submitting hire forms
  • processing post-award Academic Service Support Agreements (ASSA) and subaward purchasing agreements
  • administering budget revisions
  • addressing post-award issues with RSP, as needed
  • processing award modifications such as no-cost extensions, carryovers, budget modifications, etc.
